01 — Why these guides

Booking, demystified

The UK music industry was worth £8bn to the economy in 2024 (UK Music, This Is Music 2025), yet most live bookings still run on handshakes and DMs. These guides cut through that: how much to pay a band in your city, how to vet an act, contract basics, what agency commission really costs, and how independent artists get on more stages without a middleman — grounded in the GigXchange Index, the UK gig calendar statistics, the Musicians' Union minimum of £167.16 per musician (April 2026), and the Music Venue Trust's 830+ grassroots venue register.

A 3-4 piece wedding band costs about £1,129 (the UK median of 1,616 fees on the GX Index). A bigger line-up, a longer evening, an early ceremony set or a long drive all add to the quote, and December and summer Saturdays book up first. See wedding bands you can book.
Fix the date and venue first, then shortlist three or four bands that play your style, listen to their live recordings and check reviews from other couples. Agree the fee, set times, first dance and PA in a written contract. Read the summer wedding guide.
Book by early autumn - December Fridays and Saturdays are the busiest dates of the year, and the best acts fill them first. Midweek December dates are easier to find later. Agree the start time, set lengths and any themed songs early too. Read the Christmas party guide.
Book New Year's Eve six months or more ahead - it is the hardest night of the year to fill, and fees are usually the highest. Agree the countdown timing and finish time in the contract. Read the New Year's Eve guide.
Usually yes - peak nights like Christmas Saturdays, New Year's Eve and summer wedding weekends carry a premium because acts can fill them many times over. Booking early and choosing a weekday or a quieter month keeps the cost down. Compare fees on the GX Index.
There are 19 seasonal guides - Christmas, New Year's Eve, weddings, Burns Night, Bonfire Night, summer festivals and more - each with when to book, what to plan and what to agree with the act. Browse every seasonal guide.
