01 — Why these guides

Booking, demystified

The UK music industry was worth £8bn to the economy in 2024 (UK Music, This Is Music 2025), yet most live bookings still run on handshakes and DMs. These guides cut through that: how much to pay a band in your city, how to vet an act, contract basics, what agency commission really costs, and how independent artists get on more stages without a middleman — grounded in the GigXchange Index, the UK gig calendar statistics, the Musicians' Union minimum of £167.16 per musician (April 2026), and the Music Venue Trust's 830+ grassroots venue register.

Open the guide for the city where the gig is - each one lists the acts based there, what they play and who is free this weekend. There are 48 city guides; if your town has none, the nearest big city's guide covers the acts who travel to you. Browse every find-a-band guide.
Yes - the same line-up can cost noticeably more in London and the South East than in the North or Scotland, mostly because of travel and living costs. Each city guide shows its own region's median where 20 or more fees back it, otherwise the UK figure. Compare fees by region on the GX Index.
Compare like for like: the same line-up size, set length and date. Listen to each act's tracks, read reviews from other bookers and ask for the quote in writing with travel included, so a band from further away is judged on its full cost. Ask each act the same questions. Browse every act on GigXchange.
For a Friday or Saturday, book four to eight weeks ahead; for December weekends and summer weddings, three to six months. Midweek pub nights can often be filled within a week or two. A calendar on each act's profile shows the dates it is free. Read the UK booking guide.
Check four things: the act plays live rather than to backing tracks, it fits the room's size and noise limit, it has public liability cover if the venue asks, and the fee, set times and PA are written into a contract. Write the contract free.
Yes - most acts travel 30 to 60 miles for a paid date, so a town without its own guide is usually covered by the nearest city's acts. Post the gig with your town and acts nearby can apply. Post a gig free.
