6 Music Festival 2027: Newcastle's Grassroots VenuesFive days of BBC Radio 6 Music in Newcastle's independent rooms next March. What was announced, what is still to come, where local acts are playing now, and the week's other news for working musicians.

The short version

BBC Radio 6 Music announced this week that its 2027 festival will run in Newcastle from 15 to 19 March: five days of gigs and DJ sets in the city's independent and grassroots venues, including a night with BBC Introducing. The line-up and the venues will be named in 2027. It is the festival's first visit to Tyneside since 2015. Our directory lists 25 open mics under Newcastle, and 20 of them run Monday to Thursday, which is where a lot of local acts play between now and March.

Below: what was announced and what is still to come, how a local act gets near it, Newcastle's open mics night by night, the rooms in our directory, what a pub gig pays against the Musicians' Union minimum, MOTH Club and the Budget, and what to do about all of it.

BBC Radio 6 Music confirmed this week that its festival is coming to Newcastle in March 2027. If you play in the North East, the obvious question is how a local act ends up on one of those bills rather than in the audience.

Nobody outside the BBC knows the venues or the line-up yet. What we do know is enough to plan around, and our own directory says a fair bit about where Newcastle's local acts are playing right now.

1. What 6 Music announced: five days in Newcastle, 15 to 19 March 2027

Independent and grassroots rooms, line-up still to come

The festival runs from Monday 15 to Friday 19 March 2027. According to On The Radio's report of the announcement, it will take place at some of Newcastle's best loved independent and grassroots venues, with performances and DJ sets from new and established artists and one night run with BBC Introducing. Highlights go out on BBC Radio 6 Music and BBC Sounds, with content on BBC Music's YouTube channel.

Samantha Moy, Head of BBC Radio 6 Music, said the station will "take our celebration of independent and grassroots venues to Newcastle". Jim Mawdsley, Newcastle City Council's principal advisor for events and culture, said the city had become "a true music city" since the festival was last there, as Dork reported, pointing to Mercury Prize recognition for North East artists. As 6 Music presenter Lauren Laverne noted in Live4ever's report, the Mercury Prize itself has just been held in Newcastle for the second year running.

What is known so far, and what is not

The BBC has published the dates and the shape of the week, and nothing else. Its festival page says the full line-up and venues will be announced in 2027. Here is how the 2027 announcement compares with the 2026 festival in Greater Manchester.

6 Music Festival: the 2026 edition against what is confirmed for 2027

The 2026 shape matters because it is the best guide to 2027 we have. This year's festival leaned on two Manchester rooms rather than spreading across the city, and the BBC Introducing night put three new acts on the same stage the headliners used. If Newcastle follows that pattern, the opening for local acts is one night, perhaps a few support slots, and whatever grows up around the week. That is my reading of the 2026 programme, not anything the BBC has said about 2027.

2. The local route in: BBC Introducing and the week around it

How BBC Introducing finds new acts

BBC Introducing is the BBC's platform for new and unsigned music. Its site invites artists to upload their music for a chance to be played on BBC Radio and to play at BBC events, and there is a local Introducing show for each area. The festival's Introducing night is the one part of the week built around new acts by design, and in 2026 it had three on the bill.

So I would not plan around it. If 2027 follows 2026, that is about three slots on one night. The useful thing about uploading is the steady chance of your local Introducing show hearing you, festival or no festival. If you are in the North East and have never done it, March is a good reason to start.

Plan for the week around it, not the main bill

The BBC has not said how the 2027 bills will be built or whether local acts will open for the headliners, so my advice is not to plan on it. The surer bet is the week around the festival. With the city on national radio for five days, I would expect more people out on weeknights than usual, and Newcastle's own promoters and venues can put on nights to meet them.

For a Newcastle act, the work between now and March is unglamorous. Keep gigging, keep one clean link that shows your music, your live footage and your free dates, and make sure the people who book the city's rooms know your name. If you are newer to all of this, our guide to booking your first gig covers the basics.

3. Newcastle's open mics by our count: 25 nights, 20 of them Monday to Thursday

Where local acts play between now and March

Before anyone books a local act, that act has usually been playing somewhere for a while, and in Newcastle a lot of that happens at open mics. We counted the active open mics listed under Newcastle in our directory on 31 October 2026. There are 25: 23 in the city and 2 over the river in Gateshead. The examples below link to each listing, and the full set is on our Newcastle open mic page.

Newcastle open mics by night, from our directory on 31 October 2026

20 of the 25 run Monday to Thursday, 80 per cent, a touch above the share across our whole directory on the same day (1,149 of 1,466 open mics, 78 per cent). That is the same midweek pattern we found nationally in our look at pubs and open mics. Wednesday is the busiest night with 8, and nothing is listed on a Saturday, which belongs to booked bills. 18 of the 25 run every week, and 23 are free to enter by our listings. One of Wednesday's eight, The Stand, is a comedy night, so musicians have seven that night and 24 across the week.

What this count can and cannot tell you

It is a snapshot of our listings, not a census of every open mic in the city. Nights come and go, and six of these 25 were last checked by us on 3 June 2026, so ring ahead before you carry an amp across town. It also counts recurring nights at named venues, which is why I trust it more than a count of one-off gigs: our gig listings mix room sizes and event types, from back rooms to theatres, so they would not compare like with like. If you run a Newcastle open mic that is missing, tell us and we will add it. For the national picture, our UK open mic directory guide explains how the listings are built.

4. Newcastle's rooms: what our directory holds, and what a pub gig pays

The rooms in our Newcastle directory

The BBC will name its venues in 2027 and I am not going to guess them. Our Newcastle directory already covers rooms such as Blues Underground, which also runs a Wednesday open mic by our listings, the Boiler Shop and Newcastle University Students' Union. Every room we hold for the city is on our Newcastle venues page, with what we know about each one.

Newcastle rooms and open mics we list

Here is a live list of Newcastle venues and open mics from our directory. It updates as rooms open, close or change hands, so it stays right after this post has dated.

What a pub gig pays: the UK median against the MU floor

Festival or not, it helps to know what the ordinary gig pays. The Musicians' Union (MU) recommends a minimum of £167.16 per musician for musicians in groups playing pubs and clubs for up to 3 hours, from April 2026, according to its national gig rates. That makes £501.48 for a trio and £668.64 for a four-piece.

Across the UK, the GX Index median for a pub or bar gig is £265 (546 fees) for a solo act, £325 (93 fees) for a duo, £350 (379 fees) for a trio or quartet and £525 (307 fees) for five or more players. Divide any of those by the number of players and set it against the £167.16 a head above. The GX Index has the full ranges by act size and event type.

Why there is no Newcastle-only figure here

We do hold Newcastle cells in the GX Index, and I looked at them for this post. When the Index refreshed on 31 October 2026, the Newcastle pub and bar cells held 19 local fees for solo acts, 19 for trios and quartets and 10 for bands of five or more. Everything else in those cells comes from national rate cards and union minimums that apply to every city, which pulls each city's figure towards the national one. That is too thin to say whether Newcastle pays more or less than anywhere else, so I am not going to. If you play Newcastle pubs, adding your own fees to the rate survey is how that changes.

5. Also this week: MOTH Club is saved, and a Budget for the self-employed

MOTH Club: the second planning application refused

In Hackney, MOTH Club has come through. Official Charts reported on 30 October that Hackney Council has refused the second planning application for flats next to the venue, after the first was refused in March 2026. The owners, Edie Andrew and Keith Miller, thanked the council's planning department and the 35,000 people who signed their petition, and said: "If we can do it here, we can do it anywhere."

NME's report sets out why the flats mattered. New homes next door would have raised the chance of a resident complaining about noise, which Music Venue Trust has repeatedly called an existential threat to grassroots venues. NME also reports that the council had received over 27,000 objection emails by December 2025. The owners credit the 35,000 petition signers, Hackney Council and the campaign groups that backed them, and any venue facing a development next door should read their account.

The Budget: mileage, the trading allowance and paternity pay

Chancellor John Healey's Budget on 28 October led on energy bills, fuel duty and wages, according to HM Treasury's release. The venue side is covered in our explainer on what changes for UK music venues in 2027. For working musicians, a handful of smaller measures matter more, and the MU's summary of the Budget sets them out.

Budget 2026 measures that touch gigging musicians, announced or confirmed at the 28 October Budget

Two cautions. The Treasury's headline release does not give a start date for the higher trading allowance, so check before you rely on it for this tax year. And under the HMRC rules on the trading allowance, you use the allowance instead of deducting your expenses, not as well as, so a player with real costs for travel, strings and gear may still be better off claiming those. The paternity change does not start until April 2029, but the MU has campaigned on it for years, and its general secretary Naomi Pohl said freelance musicians had been "penalised by an inflexible system for far too long", as the union's paternity pay statement puts it.

6. What it means for you

Here is how the week reads from each side of the booking.

Artists
Be findable before March
The line-up is not out, and the Introducing night is the one slot built for new acts. If you are in the North East, upload to BBC Introducing, keep playing the midweek open mics and make sure your music, live clips and free dates sit behind one link a booker can open.
Venues
Plan the week around it
Picked or not, Newcastle will be on national radio from 15 to 19 March. A local bill on the Monday or Tuesday of festival week costs little to plan now, and your open mic regulars are a ready-made scouting list.
Book acts: for venues
Promoters and agents
Book the nights around the festival
The BBC books its own bills, so the nights around them are where you come in. Hold dates in the week of 15 March, pair one draw with two local acts, and get your announcement out before the festival line-up lands.
Plan a night: for promoters · for agents
Organisers
Use a week the city is listening
A community gig, a charity night or a showcase in the same week borrows the attention for nothing. Book early, keep it local, and pay players at least the MU minimum where the budget allows.
Find acts: for organisers

7. What to do next

Five things worth doing before March, whichever side of the stage you are on.

  1. Bookmark the festival page. The BBC's 6 Music Festival page is where the venues and line-up will appear in 2027.
  2. Upload to BBC Introducing. BBC Introducing takes uploads from new artists and has a local show for each area.
  3. Play the midweek nights. Our Newcastle open mic page lists the nights we hold, with times and sign-up details, and the open mic finder covers the rest of the region.
  4. Check your fee against the floor. Compare what you charge with the MU national gig rates and the GX Index before the spring bookings land.
  5. Make yourself bookable. A free GigXchange profile puts your music, fee range and free dates in one link you can send to a promoter, a venue or a festival team.

I will come back to this when the BBC names the venues and the line-up. If you are a Newcastle act and you get the call, I would love to hear about it. For how the grassroots circuit is doing nationally, our State of the Circuit report pulls the numbers together, and last week's post on Hometown Meltdown covers the other festival heading into small rooms this winter.

None have been named yet. The BBC says the full line-up and venues will be announced in 2027. In 2026 the festival used Band on the Wall and YES in Manchester. On The Radio's report has the announcement in full, and our Newcastle venue pages cover the rooms we hold.
The BBC has not published how acts will be chosen for 2027. The one night built for new acts is the BBC Introducing night, and BBC Introducing takes uploads from new artists through its own site. Beyond that, keep playing and keep yourself easy to book: a free artist profile puts your music and free dates in one link.
On 31 October 2026 our directory listed 25 active open mics under Newcastle, 23 in the city and 2 in Gateshead, one of them a comedy night. 20 of the 25 run Monday to Thursday, Wednesday is the busiest night with 8, and none is listed on a Saturday. The current list is on our Newcastle open mic page, and the open mic finder covers the rest of the UK.
The MU recommends a minimum of £167.16 per musician for musicians in groups playing pubs and clubs for up to 3 hours, from April 2026, and £222.88 per musician for functions of up to 4 hours. The figures are on the MU national gig rates page, and the GX Index shows what UK gigs actually pay.

Annual refresh commitment

This guide was published on 31 October 2026 and is refreshed every October. The festival's venues and line-up, our Newcastle open mic counts and the Budget detail all move between updates, so annual verification matters. We re-verify every reference, recommendation, and data point once a year. Next scheduled refresh: October 2027. If any claim is outdated before then, email support@gigxchange.app and we aim to update it within one working day.
