NX Newcastle on Westgate Road is the city's flagship academy-scale music venue — formerly the Carling Academy and then the O2 Academy Newcastle, reopened under the NX name in September 2022 after a complete refurbishment. The main room holds around 1,550 for live shows (up to 2,100 for club nights), with a smaller upstairs space, the former Academy 2, taking up to 380 for emerging and lesser-known acts. Across its history the main stage has hosted Arctic Monkeys, Adele, Katy Perry, The Libertines, Sam Smith, Blondie and Amy Winehouse, and today it runs a broad programme of touring rock, indie, pop, metal, electronic and country gigs alongside major club nights. A cornerstone of the North East touring circuit.
