Newcastle University runs an active programme of live music across its city-centre campus in Newcastle upon Tyne. Its Music Department stages weekly Thursday lunchtime concerts — free and open to the public — in the multi-purpose King's Hall, the Recital Room and the Band Room, ranging from classical to contemporary. Larger ticketed rock and indie gigs (recent bills include John 5) take place through the adjoining Students' Union venue. Together they make the university one of the city's busiest grassroots and student live-music hubs.
