The Night

The open mic at The Canons' Gait on Edinburgh's Canongate is the Loud Poets open mic — a poetry night, not a music one — running on the second and last Monday of each month. Doors are 6:30pm for a 7pm start, it's free and unticketed, and it wraps up around 9:30pm with a short interval and a featured guest poet each time. Slots are five minutes; sign up in advance via the Loud Poets online form, with a couple of door spots drawn at random on the night. All ages and all styles welcome — past performers have ranged from 8 to 80.

About The Canons' Gait

The Canons' Gait sits at the Canongate foot of Edinburgh's Royal Mile, a few steps from Holyrood Palace and the Scottish Parliament. The 18th-century building runs a modern upstairs lounge bar over a cellar bar that has long been the live-music room: traditional and contemporary folk plays Wednesday through Saturday, and the long-running 'Out of the Bedroom' songwriters' night gathers musicians and regulars in the basement on Thursdays to play original material and listen. The cellar is a busy Free Fringe comedy and music venue every August, packing the room most nights of the Edinburgh Festival. Part of the Old Town Pub Co. group.

Planning Your Monday Night
