Every month GigXchange counts which UK grassroots venues have the most gigs listed in our directory for the next 30 days and writes the board up. The latest is October 2026, counted 2 October: Hare And Hounds Kings Heath holds number one on 51 gigs, the 12 rooms hold 299 between them, and 140 of those 299 fall Monday to Thursday.

Where the board comes from
The directory is built from Ticketmaster and Skiddle imports plus member submissions, filtered to grassroots rooms at import. The count runs every night and feeds the live board. Once a month, on the first Friday, we freeze it, write the issue and replace the table above. It describes gigs listed with us, not every gig in Britain, and a room only counts if it has a page in the grassroots venue directory.
2. Every issue, newest first
October 2026: Hare And Hounds Kings Heath, 51 gigs in 30 days
The first issue with a month-on-month table. Hare And Hounds Kings Heath holds number one, with 51 listings in its window against the 40 it held on 4 September. Blue Dog in Glasgow arrives at second on 43, with The Sunflower Lounge, YES, The Abbey and Electric Bristol behind it. Seven of the rooms ranked on 4 September are still ranked and five are not. September 2026: Hare And Hounds Kings Heath, 41 gigs in 30 days
The first issue and the baseline for every later one, counted on 5 September 2026. Hare And Hounds Kings Heath leads on 41, O2 Institute Birmingham is second on 32 and Brudenell Social Club third on 28. The Cluny climbs three, and The Castle And Falcon, YES, Blue Dog and Camp And Furnace enter. Birmingham places three of the 12 from the fourth-biggest city calendar, and the 12 play 38% of their gigs Monday to Thursday against 27% across the directory. Read the September 2026 issue.
3. How the ranking works
What counts as a gig
An active grassroots listing in the GigXchange gig directory with a date inside the 30 days starting on the counting day. Listings arrive from Ticketmaster and Skiddle imports and from members who submit a gig. A grassroots filter runs at import, so arena and stadium dates never enter the count. Each listed show counts once, so a room with two stages, or two shows on one night, counts both.
What counts as a room
A venue with an active page in the grassroots venue directory. Gigs at venues we do not yet hold a page for are listed but invisible to the ranking, which is the single biggest reason a busy room can be missing. Rooms our directory team has excluded from the statistics for data-quality reasons, such as a church that hosts candlelight concerts, are left out. Capacity plays no part: a 100-capacity pub and a 1,000-capacity hall count the same per listed show.
The move column and the month-on-month table
Move is places gained or lost against the newest nightly board at least seven days old; New means the room was not in that top 12. From the second issue on, each post also carries a month-on-month table against the previous issue’s board. Those two boards count two different, non-overlapping 30-day windows, so the honest reading is listings held a month ago against listings held now, never growth. Ties keep alphabetical order.
What it is not
It is not a census of British live music, not a measure of ticket sales or takings, and not a judgement of quality. It is the most active rooms in the calendar we can see. 4. Use the board
Get your room on it
The board is recomputed every night, so a room that starts listing shows up long before the next issue. Three steps, none of which cost money.
- Claim your page in the grassroots venue directory: open your room and press Claim This Venue.
- List every gig, including the Tuesday residency that never goes on a ticket site, via the submit a gig form or from inside the app.
- Fill the midweek. The rooms that hold a place every month book Monday to Thursday; the venue tools show who is available near you.
