The Night
The Three Legged Mare — the "Wonky Donkey" — is a friendly real-ale pub on High Petergate inside the city walls, with a proper live-music streak. Davey Richmond's Open Mic runs on Thursdays from 8pm: an acoustic guitar is provided, and there's a free drink for every performer who steps up. It's a warm, welcoming room (the pub also hosts a traditional Irish folk session on Fridays), so just turn up and add your name.
About Three Legged Mare
The Three Legged Mare is a lively traditional pub at 15 High Petergate (YO1 7EN), at the Minster end of York's old town and the city's go-to spot for pre- and post-theatre drinks. Opened in 2001 and owned since December 2018 by Black Sheep Brewery (which now brews the York Brewery beers here), the pub is modern and light yet keeps a historic feel — it takes its name from a 'three-man' hanging gallows, a replica of which stands in the rear garden. It hosts regular live music, typically from 8pm, with a weekly traditional Irish music session a long-running fixture alongside folk and acoustic open-mic-style nights. A small but warmly welcoming grassroots room with an in-house PA, it's a reliable home for trad, folk and acoustic players in central York.
