The Night

The Eagle & Child on High Petergate hosts York's long-running Thursday Night Jazz Jam — a regular jazz session (the pub bills it 'Steak & Jazz') where players can sit in, anchored by a rotating cast of local jazz quartets. It runs every Thursday from around 8:30pm in a roomy, atmospheric city-centre pub. This is a jazz jam rather than a general all-genres open mic, so it suits jazz musicians best; entry is free.

About Eagle & Child

The Eagle & Child is a Grade II* listed, timber-framed pub built in 1640 on High Petergate in the centre of York, in the shadow of York Minster. Spread over three floors, it offers spaces for groups large and small, with window seats looking out onto High Petergate. The pub serves homemade food and beers from Leeds Brewery, and it frequently programmes live music — most famously its weekly 'Steak & Jazz' nights every Thursday. It carries a slice of rock history too: the Rolling Stones reportedly hung out in the top-floor bar in the 1960s, leaving lipstick signatures still on the wall. Open Monday-Wednesday 11:00-23:00, Thursday-Saturday 11:00-00:00 and Sunday 11:00-22:30.
