Matt & Phred's is one of Manchester's best-loved jazz clubs, an intimate room at 64 Tib Street in the Northern Quarter (M4 1LW) that has been a fixture of the city's live-music scene for decades. It puts on live music every night of the week — jazz, blues, soul, funk and brass — alongside stone-baked pizza and cocktails, with a full backline including house drums and an upright piano and an in-house sound engineer. Monday is free-entry open mic night, giving emerging players a friendly, appreciative room to perform in; the club is open Monday to Saturday and some Sundays (capacity around 180). The Night
Matt & Phred's is Manchester's longest-running jazz club (open in the Northern Quarter since 1993), and every Monday the stage is thrown open for a free weekly jam from 8pm to 11pm. The themes rotate through the month - the venue's August 2026 programme runs a Blues Jam (3 Aug), the M&P Jazz Jam led by Johnny Hunter and his band (10 Aug, the second Monday of the month), a New Orleans Jam (17 Aug), an All Star Jam (24 Aug) and the Melody Makers Jam (31 Aug) - so one week it's straight-up bebop, the next it's blues, soul, trad or New Orleans. Regular hosts over the years include The Night Creatures, Johnny Hunter and Franny Eubank.
How it works
Doors 6pm, jam 8pm to 11pm, free entry. There is no sign-up sheet - the venue's own words are 'welcoming all musicians/singers to jam with the band - just chat to the band leader'. A proper backline is waiting (upright piano, kit, amps), so turn up, find the host and get on. Happy hour runs 6pm to 7:30pm and it's worth booking a table (0161 273 5495 daytime, 0161 831 7002 evenings), because even on a Monday this candlelit room fills fast.
