The Mermaid is an elegant, subtly glamorous bar at 11b Gandy Street, Exeter (EX4 3LS, Devon), tucked among the independent shops and bars of Gandy Street. It hosts an open mic every Wednesday and a much-loved monthly jazz session in its intimate basement bar, led by saxophonist/flautist Pete Canter and the house band with invited guests — singers, trumpet players and guitarists. Doors for the jazz nights open at 7.30pm (£10 advance / £15 on the door, cash only). A welcoming grassroots room for Exeter's acoustic and jazz players.
