Whistlebinkies is an Edinburgh institution - a live-music bar buried in the vaults under South Bridge that has been running for over 30 years. Its open mic is the longest-running in the city and is now hosted by Nico: a showcase band warms the room from 8pm, then open-mic performers take over at 9pm, rolling into a jam session from midnight onwards. Sign-up opens at 8pm at the venue and it's walk-in only - don't leave it late, as the slots fill fast. Every Monday there's a featured artist playing an extended set. Entry is free, there's a free beer for every performer, and the house rig is a proper one: PA, backline (guitar, bass and a drum kit) and professional sound engineers, so you can turn up without lugging your own gear down the stairs. Find it at 4-6 South Bridge, Edinburgh EH1 1LL - right in the Old Town, open till 3am.
