The Golden Cross is the oldest pub in Coventry — a striking Tudor building at 8 Hay Lane (CV1 5RF), built c.1583 with jettied upper floors and exposed beams, near the cathedral. It's a lively grassroots music local: a full-band open mic every Tuesday, 8pm-11pm (hosted by Flat Badger), live music every Saturday downstairs from 9pm-11pm, and an alternative DJ playing rock, punk, metal and ska on the first Saturday of each month. Known for its gluten-free kitchen as well as its music, it leans toward the alternative/rock end of the spectrum and welcomes both original acts and covers. A characterful, music-first pub in the heart of Coventry.
