The Night

Future Yard is Birkenhead's grassroots live-music venue, and its open mic — long hosted by musician and FY Propeller Mentor Katie Mac — is a warm, supportive room for testing new material. It runs monthly (typically a Tuesday, occasionally a Wednesday) from 7pm to 11pm in the Live Room at 75 Argyle Street, with no advance booking: just turn up and play two or three songs, ideally at least one original, and you'll get a drinks token. Note the night is currently on hiatus — the venue says it's 'working on bringing it back on a regular basis', so check futureyard.org before you travel.

About Future Yard

Future Yard is a 280-capacity grassroots music venue, bar, coffee shop and rehearsal-studio complex at 75 Argyle Street in Birkenhead, Wirral (Merseyside). Opened in 2021 by Future Yard CIC, it programmes the best in contemporary alternative, jazz, electronic, folk and experimental music and has hosted the likes of Gruff Rhys, OMD, Doves and Black Country, New Road, with artist rehearsal rooms in the basement. Its free open mic is for solo singer-songwriters (not full band setups) — performers don't book in advance, just turn up and speak to staff, play two or three songs (at least one original preferred) and get a drink token. The venue also runs 'Wordsmithery', an open-mic spoken-word and poetry night. Open seven days a week.

Planning Your Tuesday Night

Arrive by 19:30 to sign up for a slot. Entry is free and the open mic typically runs until 23:00. Full backline is provided — just bring your instrument and pedals.
