Jude the Obscure is a characterful pub at 54 Walton Street in the bohemian Jericho quarter of Oxford (OX2 6AE), opened in 1871 as the Prince of Wales and renamed in 1995 in tribute to Thomas Hardy. It is a genuine live-music room with a top in-house PA system and guitar and keyboard provided if needed, hosting open mic nights plus a regular run of spoken word and musical performances — from poetry recitals to jazz and country improvisations, and Irish folk sessions on Sunday afternoons (2-5pm). A heated, lit courtyard rounds out the offer.

Jude The Obscure is a characterful Greene King pub on Walton Street in Oxford's Jericho. It used to host a well-equipped open mic — with a good in-house PA and guitar and keyboard provided — but that night is now confirmed to have stopped (no open mic listed as of recent checks). The pub still does live music and live sport, so it's worth asking at the bar (01865 557 309) whether anything informal has replaced it.
