The Peer Hat is one of the most active grassroots music venues in Manchester, tucked down Faraday Street (14-16, M1 1BE) in the Northern Quarter — more back alley than thoroughfare, in keeping with the city's habit of hiding its best DIY institutions in plain sight. The ground floor is a warm, unpretentious bar with wooden tables and sofas; the intimate basement stage hosts live gigs focused on local talent nearly every night of the week, plus DJ sets and electronic/retro-electro open-mic takeovers, club nights (New Wave, Italo, synthpop) and panels. Its inclusive, no-frills ethos has made it a cornerstone of the Northern Quarter's underground scene.
