About The Southgate Club

The ‌‌‍Southgate Club has been going since 1820, when it started life as the Southgate Reading Society - in its own words, "bringing entertainment and enjoyment to you and the community for 206 years". It runs as a not-for-profit (company no. 00437675).

The music programme is unusually busy for a members' club: Open Mic Night on the second and fourth Monday of each month, "Rockin' at the Southgate Club" on the third Wednesday, monthly country nights from September 2026, plus blues jams, musicians' showcases, tribute shows, discos and a comedy club.

Members pay less on the door than the public (GBP 15 against GBP 18 on a typical ticket). The club has a games room, members' bar, front lounge and art gallery, and hires its function rooms out for private events.

‌‌‍The night

The Southgate Club runs an Open Mic Night and Musicians' Showcase on the 2nd and 4th Monday of every month, starting at 7.30pm in Obie's Bar. Entry is free, and in the club's own words there is a "free drink for all the musicians performing".

It is billed as open to everyone - "all welcome, some very talented performers, both young and old" - so it works as a first-gig room as well as somewhere established players drop into.

The venue

The Southgate Club has been going since 1820, when it began as the Southgate Reading Society, and runs today as a not-for-profit (company no. 00437675). Alongside the open mic it programmes blues jams, tribute shows, country nights, discos and a comedy club, and hires out its function rooms.

Dates occasionally shift around public holidays - the club posts changes on its own site.
