Exeter Phoenix is the city's flagship multi-arts venue, tucked down Gandy Street at Bradninch Place (EX4 3LS) with a main auditorium of around 450. Beyond ticketed gigs across music, theatre, cinema, contemporary art, dance and comedy, the Cafe Bar hosts grassroots performance nights — including the long-running spoken-word/open-mic strand 'Taking the Mic', hosted by poet Tim King, which welcomes singer-songwriters alongside comedy and poetry. A welcoming, well-equipped home for emerging Devon talent in the heart of Exeter's city centre.

About Exeter Phoenix

About This Open Mic
The Night
Exeter Phoenix is the city's multi-arts venue, tucked down Gandy Street, and its current open-mic fixture is 'Taking the Mic' — a free monthly spoken-word and poetry open mic on the third Wednesday of the month from 8pm, hosted by spoken word artist and pandemic Bard of Exeter Tim King. Book a performance slot by emailing TTM@speakinsong.co.uk, or just come and watch. The venue has previously hosted broader open-mic nights too (the inclusive Illumic night for music, comedy and performing arts, and an under-25s 'IRL' open mic) — those aren't currently on the calendar, so check the Phoenix what's-on page if you're after a music slot. A properly welcoming, well-run stage rather than a noisy back room.
