About The Abbey

The Abbey is a restored Victorian pub on Guildhall Close in Hulme, on the edge of Manchester Science Park. It has stood here since the 1890s and spent years as the Old Abbey Taphouse before closing in early 2025. It reopened as The Abbey on 12 June 2026 under the team behind Now Wave and YES, who kept the old boozer intact and built a new 100-capacity live music room at the rear, dedicated to grassroots artists and emerging talent. Expect breakthrough bands, cult favourites, DJ sets and community events alongside pub food, pies and a carefully chosen beer list. There are two outdoor beer gardens, including the restored original. The building carries real Manchester history: in 1953 the boxer and anti-racism campaigner Len Johnson was refused service here because of his colour, and the protest that followed drew more than 200 people to the street outside.
