Hafan Yr Afon is Newtown's riverside community centre and cafe, run by Open Newtown on the banks of the River Severn behind the Back Lane car park. By day it is a bright, dog-friendly cafe with homemade food, a children's play area and balcony seating over the river. By night the state-of-the-art function space, which hosts anything between one and 140 people, turns into a venue for live music, jazz nights, comedy, theatre, talks and community events. The open mic is a monthly Sunday-afternoon session hosted by Tommy Mills, starting at 2pm - free live music and a soft landing for first-timers - with the next listed date on Sunday 6 September 2026.
