The Foundry is the main live-music and club-night venue at Sheffield Students' Union on Western Bank, recently named the best night club in Sheffield. It's a three-room space: the headline Foundry room holds up to 1,065 people with a large performance stage, the Studio room takes up to 500, and the full multi-room configuration accommodates around 1,800. As well as touring gigs it's home to legendary student nights including Pop Tarts, ROAR, The Tuesday Club and Soul Jam, plus comedy and literature events. The Union invests in top-of-the-line sound systems, lighting and acoustics, giving artists a properly equipped, high-capacity stage — a significant step up from a grassroots room and a key fixture on Sheffield's live circuit.

The Night
The open mic at Sheffield Students' Union is run by the University of Sheffield Poetry Society - an award-winning night held once a month, on the third Tuesday, in Bar One's function room, the Raynor Lounge. Bar One is around the corner from Foundry in the same Students' Union building on Western Bank. You can read your own work or simply come and listen: performing is entirely optional. It's a warm, low-pressure room and one of the few dedicated spoken-word open mics in the city.
