Bookings & Gigs

How do I check which music licences my venue needs?

Use the Licence Checker, a tool for venue accounts. Open Bookings and choose Licence Checker.

It asks up to ten questions, one at a time: where your venue is, what kind of music you have, how many people attend, how often, and a few more that only appear when your earlier answers make them relevant. Your answers build into a sentence at the top - tap any part of it to change that answer, or press Start again.

Once every question is answered, your verdict appears in two parts:

  • Permission to stage it - whether putting the music on needs permission from your council
  • Copyright - the music itself - whether you need a licence to play the music

Each part is marked All clear, Action needed, Check required or Likely exempt, with a link to the official page. Where it applies, you also see an estimated cost and a link to get an exact quote. Your action plan lists the steps to take, each linked to its official source.

If you may need a Temporary Event Notice, the TEN deadline planner appears: pick the night of your event and it shows the last day to file, and GigXchange reminds you a week before. Under Your licensing authority, enter your venue's postcode and press Find (or Update, once a council is saved) to see which council handles your licensing.

Your answers save to your venue. To keep a copy, press the download-arrow icon at the top right of the page header - it has no words on screen; hovering it says Export PDF.

The checker is guidance, not legal advice. Confirm your exact position with your licensing authority, gov.uk and PPL PRS.
