The Citadel is a live-music venue, theatre and arts centre on the corner of Waterloo Street and Milk Street in the centre of St Helens, in a building that dates to 1861. Wikipedia records it opening that year as a music hall and theatre called the Theatre Royal, with two balconies and a large stage - the venue's own site says the building started life as a chapel for the United Methodist Free Church. Either way the Salvation Army bought it in 1889, stripped out the theatrical fittings and ran it as their Citadel until the early 1980s. It reopened as an arts centre in 1988 and through the 1990s gave early stages to The Stone Roses, The La's, The Verve and Cast. It closed in June 2019, was bought by the entrepreneur Ian Pitts in 2020 and reopened under new management, and now trades as The Citadel Theatre with a bill of rock, indie, punk and metal alongside a strong line in tribute acts and comedy - Martin Turner ex Wishbone Ash, ACDC UK, DS:UK and A Band Called Malice all feature in the 2026 to 2027 listings.
