The Debates Chamber is the grand main hall of the Glasgow University Union (GUU), founded in 1885, on University Avenue in the Hillhead area of the city's West End. Restored to its original stature with high ceilings, wood-panelled walls and a gallery, the room has strong acoustics and holds roughly 150-200 standing for live music, with extra gallery seating. As well as ceilidhs, balls and debates, it runs a regular gig programme and hosts festivals such as Glas-Goes Pop; past performers at the Union include Belle and Sebastian and a young Lewis Capaldi. The Union also operates other music spaces including the HIVE nightclub with its Funktion-One system, so visiting acts use house production rather than bringing their own PA.
