The ‌‌‍National Centre for Early Music occupies the medieval, Grade I listed church of St Margaret's in the heart of York's Walmgate. Converted in 2000 with a National Lottery grant, the building seats audiences of up to 180 and is renowned for exceptional acoustics, enhanced by a specially designed roof and adjustable baffles that make it equally suited to live concerts and studio-quality recordings. The NCEM runs a spring and autumn season of high-calibre artists and is the home of the internationally acclaimed York Early Music Festival, established in 1977. While its name and core programme centre on early and classical music, the converted-church acoustic and intimate scale also draw folk, world, jazz and singer-songwriter bookings — the source listing here was a gig by US alt-rock artist Kristin Hersh. It is a fully professional concert hall rather than a bring-your-own-PA grassroots room.
