The Lamproom Theatre is Barnsley's only theatre, a volunteer-run 187-seat venue on Westgate in the town centre (S70 2DX). The Grade II listed building opened in 1794 as a Methodist chapel and was bought by Barnsley Theatre Trust in 1998, launching as 'The People's Theatre' in 1999. The programme leans heavily on live tribute nights - rock, pop and soul acts covering the Drifters, Beatles, Bee Gees, Fleetwood Mac, Springsteen and Dire Straits - alongside plays, comedy, musicals and an annual family pantomime. A PA system is provided for performers and an in-house sound engineer is available. Box office open Tuesday to Thursday, 10am-2pm.
