The Back Room of the Star Inn is the gig room of a 16th-century pub at 2 Quarry Street, Guildford, Surrey (GU1 3TY) — not London, as the import wrongly recorded. Built in the 1840s as the 'Court Room' for the Ancient Order of Foresters, the back room is now Guildford's longest-running live-music space and a genuine piece of UK music history: it hosted The Stranglers' first-ever gig on 21 December 1974 (marked by a CAMRA plaque and a PRS for Music Heritage Award presented in 2019). The room holds up to around 100, has its own bar plus buffet menu and modern lighting and PA, and programmes rock, punk, blues, indie and tribute bands several nights a week. Backed by the Music Venue Trust through a noise dispute, it remains a defiantly grassroots band pub serving Shepherd Neame ales. Tel 01483 532887.
