Sunderland Empire is the North East's largest theatre, an Edwardian Grade II listed venue at 4–5 High Street West, Sunderland (SR1 3EX), operated by ATG Entertainment. Opened in 1907, it seats around 1,860 and hosts a year-round programme of West End musicals, touring plays, opera, comedy, pantomime and live music concerts. Recent and upcoming seasons include Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Les Misérables, Mamma Mia! and Just For One Day — The Live Aid Musical. This is a major commercial receiving house rather than a grassroots room, but live music does feature in its bills.
