The Hope and Anchor is one of London's most storied grassroots live music venues, a pub and basement music room at 207 Upper Street in Islington that first opened in 1880. In the mid-1970s it became a cradle of British pub rock and then a frontline punk venue — Stiff Records was founded here, and the basement stage hosted The Damned, Joy Division, U2, Ian Dury, The Stranglers and The Police, with The Libertines and Enter Shikari following decades later. Following a top-to-bottom refurbishment the venue now has a brand-new PA system, an enlarged stage and a full stage lighting rig, and provides backline (drum kit, bass and guitar amps) for visiting acts. Programming centres on rock, punk, indie and alternative original bands. The pub is open Sunday to Thursday 12pm–11pm and Friday to Saturday 12pm–1am.
