Herrington Country Park is a large open-air park near Penshaw, on the southern edge of Sunderland (Houghton-le-Spring), set beneath the landmark Penshaw Monument — not London, despite the slug. It's primarily a country park rather than a dedicated music venue, but it stages major one-off open-air concerts: in May 2026 it hosted BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend (22-24 May), drawing around 100,000 fans across a line-up including Fatboy Slim, Zara Larsson, Ellie Goulding, Olivia Dean and Niall Horan — the festival's return to Sunderland after 21 years.
