What Venues Get Wrong About Booking Live Music

I’ve talked to hundreds of venue owners and bookers while building GigXchange. The ones who run successful live music programmes have a lot in common. The ones who struggle tend to make the same handful of mistakes.

This isn’t about blame. Venues are under enormous pressure — tight margins, licensing headaches, staffing issues. Live music is often one of a dozen things competing for attention. But the booking process itself creates avoidable problems that compound over time.

Relying on the Same Small Network

This is the big one. Most venues have a rotation of 10–15 acts they book regularly. Those acts are reliable, the audience knows them, and the booking process is easy because everyone already has each other’s number.

  2. The industry gets better data — other venues can see which acts are reliable, which means fewer no-shows and cancellations across the board.
